Restoring Eye Comfort: How LipiFlow and InModePL Help Ocular Surface Inflammation

Most people don’t realize that 86% of all dry eye disease is a consequence of unclean eyelids which eventually cause inflammatory cascades that produce the symptoms of ocular surface disease. These include  burning and gritty eyes that can make reading, computer work, driving, and contact lens wear uncomfortable. At Forefront Eye Care, we are internationally known for developing protocols and treatments that focus on personalized dry eye management using advanced diagnostics and targeted options such as LipiFlow and inMode IPL/RadioFrequency.

How Ocular Surface Inflammation Affects Eye Comfort

The ocular surface includes the front of the eye and the tear film that protects it. When the eyelids are not properly cared for, the earliest changes occur in the meibomian glands, which alters the oil they are supposed to produce, causing the tears to evaporate too quickly. This exposes the eyes to ongoing irritation and can contribute to redness, fluctuating vision, sensitivity, and discomfort. When the glands become obstructed or inflamed, they must be cleaned, similar to a dental cleaning. Over the counter drops and medications will not fix this elemental problem. Home care with eyelid specific cleaners and warm compresses are both preventative care measures that everyone should engage in starting at an early age.

Signs You May Need a Dry Eye Evaluation

Ocular surface inflammation does not feel the same for everyone. Common concerns include:

•          Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations

•          Red or watery eyes

•          Blurred or fluctuating vision

•          Light sensitivity

•          Contact lens discomfort

•          Eye fatigue during screen use

A comprehensive dry eye evaluation at Forefront in Boston helps us identify which factors are affecting your tear film and determine whether an in-office treatment belongs in your personalized care plan.

How LipiFlow Supports Healthier Oil Flow

LipiFlow is designed to address obstructed meibomian glands. Invented by our own Donald Korb and FDA approved in 2016, millions of Lipiflow procedures have been given throughout the world. The system applies carefully controlled heat to the inner eyelids while using gentle pressure to help clear gland blockages. By restoring the flow of natural oils, LipiFlow supports a more stable tear film and targets an important cause of evaporative dry eye.

Because LipiFlow focuses directly on meibomian gland function, it offers a targeted approach that works best when supplemented with home eyelid cleaning. The procedure is completed in our Boston office and may be recommended as part of a broader dry eye management plan.

How Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Targets Inflammation

IPL uses controlled pulses of light around the eyelid area to address factors associated with ocular surface inflammation. This non-invasive treatment is designed to reduce inflammatory blood vessels, support meibomian gland function, and decrease bacteria and Demodex mites around the eyelids.

For patients with rosacea, eyelid redness, blocked oil glands and recurring inflammation, IPL can help interrupt the cycle that contributes to dry eye symptoms. Treatment recommendations vary based on skin type, medical history, medications, and findings from the evaluation. IPL can be used alone or in combination with Lipiflow.

A More Complete Approach to Eye Comfort

LipiFlow and InMode IPL address different parts of the dry eye cycle. LipiFlow focuses on clearing obstructed glands, while OptiLight IPL can clean the glands but also targets inflammation and related eyelid factors. When appropriate, using these technologies within a customized plan can support better tear film quality and more comfortable eyes.
